Item Description...
Seventy-eight per cent of eligible American employees participate in their company's 401(k) plan, comprising over 40 million workers. The Enron collapse, coupled with new uncertainty in the investing and accounting industries, however, has even longtime 401(k) investors rethinking their approach. This guide explains the basics of 401(k) investing in plain English, showing readers how to manage their accounts, minimize their investment risk and maximize their returns. It discusses the pros and cons of including company stock and helps readers decide whether taking out a loan against their 401(k) is a wise idea. The text explains the difference between a defined contribution and a defined benefit plan, including the pros and cons of each, includes sample 401(k) portfolios for various stages of life and contains retirement calculator formula so readers know how much they need to save.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Future 401k Member  Feb 16, 2007
I must admit, I'm pretty slow when it comes to finances. It's my first year as a post-college student and I can't imagine saving my money until 59. But, I like the ideas in this book and I think I will. It explains everything! If you're an expert or not, you can use this book. I like the idea that saving for a 401k will lower the taxes on your paycheck. I'm on that borderline where if I made a little less, they wouldn't take out so much. So, I want to start a 401k to lower that income a bit. This book will make a believer out of you. There is a chapter dedicated for every excuse you may have for not wanting one (and it's easy to read). I dare you to see if you're excuse is not in there. See if they don't have a section for your special case. Prove me wrong. You won't.

Informative and well-written  Apr 3, 2006
Though a bit dated (2002/2003), it offers a good amount of information and detail on the 401(k) plan for the beginner. The authors build a good case and show by examples why investing for retirement is important and how starting early can make a lot of difference. It was a quick read even with a lot of financial terms explained and I believe I am wiser having read it.
